You probably have post nasal drip, you don't notice it during the day because we are vertical and gravity pulls the phlemn down.
You might have an allergy if you have a lot of it, it might also be from acid reflux, do you have a bad taste in your mouth, or have heartburn?

The same thing happens to me. I believe it's allergies. It doesn't help that we have had an unusually warm winter that hasn't really killed out the ragweed and pollen in the air. I contain mine by using a nose spray and OTC medication. You might want to get with your pharmacist to see what they recommend.

Are you a mouth-breather? Saliva can pool in the bottom of your throat and become thick and sticky through evaporation. You may want to try those "Breathe Right" strips you can put on your nose to open it.
