Generally winter vegetables were root vegetables that could be stored in a cool basement in days before we had canned and/or frozen vegetables or the gift of having fresh vegetables from around the world at all times. They were hardier vegetables that did not spoil easily or within a short time. If you get hold of an older cookbook you will find more concise lists of winter vegetales.

I am having trouble finding winter vegetables as well! I've resorted to taking a whole food supplement that has raw vegetables & vegetable juice in it... http://www.juiceplus.com/+jr60515 - so far I've been really impressed. Hope that helps you on your search!
