Remedy for a heart attack is a complicated question. First it would have to be diagnosed by a procedure called a cardiac catherization or angiogram. This is where the doctor injects a radio-opaque die in the femoral (thigh) veins to determine the size of the lesion. There are also other tests like EKG which is a electrical signal of how the heart is functioning, or a CK-MB which is blood test for a heart attack.

Thrombolytic therapy uses drugs to dissolve a clot. The most radical is a Coronary Artery Bypass Graft. This procedure uses arteries from your leg or other part of the body and is grafted on the heart bypassing the block artery. Which procedure is right for a patient is determined by the cardiologist based on the severity of the clot.

The following steps may be taken to avoid heart attacks and stroke.

* Control Diabetes Mellitus. Control your blood glucose & do self-monitoring as & when required. (Target: Fasting blood sugar 60-100 mg/dL; Postprandial blood sugar 2 hours after food-Less than 140 mg/dL)
* Health life style. Exercise regularly & stay healthy.
* Aspirin- Check with your doctor if you need to take aspirin daily.
* Blood pressure. Get your blood pressure checked every visit. (Target: Below 130/80 mm Hg).
* Cholesterol- Get your LDL (bad cholesterol) levels checked at least once a year. (Target: Below 100 mg/dL). Triglycerides. (Target: Less than 150 mg/dL) Serum Cholesterol (Target: Less than 200 mg/dL) HDL (good cholesterol) (Target: More than 50 mg/dL). Eat a low-cholesterol, low-fat diet. This kind of diet includes cottage cheese, fat-free milk, fish (not canned in oil), vegetables, poultry, egg whites, and polyunsaturated oils and margarines (corn, safflower, canola, and soybean oils). Avoid foods with excess fat in them such as meat (especially liver and fatty meat), egg yolks, whole milk, cream, butter, shortening, lard, pastries, cakes, cookies, gravy, peanut butter, chocolate, olives, potato chips, coconut, cheese (other than cottage cheese), coconut oil, palm oil, and fried foods.
*Stop tobacco smoking.
*Stop consuming alcohol.
For diabetic patients, heart attack will not cause any pain. Only excessive perspiration. Hence it is known as silent attack.
