Stuff from our own garden, we don't peel. I just wash carrots with my hand in water. For chunkier root veggies or we use a toothbrush and water. For mystery, organic or non-organic food from the store, washing and peeling would be a good idea. Who knows where they've been.

I would scrub it with a soft nylon brush; but would then peal it. That way all the dirt will be gone.
