From the water, you would have known. Bacteria lives in the water so long as its warm. If the water was cold, most if not all has died. Bacteria from other people's waste would have made you ill, diarrhea most likely. From the seat, absolutely. Viruses such as the herpes virus, and parasites such as crabs will die once the toilet seat has cooled off. The Hpv virus lives longer though and is more contagious. Also, if there is any blood residue that is infected with Hepatitis, that can be contagious long after is has cooled to room temperature.

So, what do you do to combat all the invisible nasties that lurk in the public bathroom? Stay in good health, take your vitamins. This will boost your immune system to help you from catching anything to begin with. Always flush a toilet twice. The water in the bowl is not completely recycled until it has been flushed twice. I know this won't please the water conservationists out there, but for us germ-a-phobes it's good to know. I do this in my home as well. Keep the toilet seat down when you flush. It keeps the germs where they're supposed to be. Always wash your hands. And don't forget to use a paper towel to touch the common surfaces after washing your hands; faucets, door handles etc. If the paper seat is available use it. It's not much of a barrier but it helps.

Most importantly, try not to think about it.

Good luck

Nope. But as a precaution put toilet paper around the seat!
