Secondhand smoke, also know as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), is a mixture of the smoke given off by the burning end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar and the smoke exhaled from the lungs of smokers. It is involuntarily inhaled by nonsmokers, lingers in the air hours after cigarettes have been extinguished and can cause or exacerbate a wide range of adverse health effects, including cancer, respiratory infections, and asthma

It's NOT the second hand smoke which is harmful, but the second hand AIR, that you breathe everyday and every minute, in closed environments, buildings without windows, artificially ventilated, where you breathe the air which has already went in and out many peoples' lungs.
Lung cancer is increasing among people who don't have to deal with second hand smoke.
And what about the genetically modified foods that you consume every day with the pesticides in them. Aren't they more dangerous than the brief or even the long term smoke?.

It depends on how brief, because it can still affect you to some extent that may not be visible at first. Usually the damage will be so small that you won't be able to tell the difference, non the less, it can still affect you as you continue to become exposed to the smoke.
