the nurse that answered your question is correct....the latest from the American Heart Association has even lowered the standards to 120/70 ....you need to get your doctor to check it out, cut back on salty foods or watch for sodium content in the foods you buy prepackaged or canned. Anything over 325 sodium content don't buy it.
I have systolic hypertension (top number only goes high) and when I go overseas I can drink in moderation and not too much of the strong Greek coffee...makes my heart rate too high.

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. One day I started to feel really faint while I was driving with my daughter in the back seat and I passed out, hitting 3 cars and ending up in a ditch. That moment,I knew I had to do something because my meds weren't working. I heard about this diet from a friend and thought I'd give it a shot. The results have been remarkable. In just 21 days, I honestly can't remember feeling this good, my blood pressure went from 175/110 to 125/70.

Yes even i feel 140/90 for a person aged 50 is ok .But since the person is aged 50 and his resistance power is low it is better to consume 1/2 glass of alcohol because later he/she should not feel that they have done a mistake .

You should read "The Blood Pressure Solution" (also available in electronic format, watch the video presentation here: http://www.fixbloodpressure.com ) It's a very comprehensive step-by-step book that walks you through the natural remedies of high blood pressure. It provides you with a lot of information on what foods to eat, how you can acquire and prepare these foods, how you can change your lifestyle for the better, how to eliminate the toxins from your body, how to reduce stress, how you can check your blood pressure level the correct way etc.
The book is amazing in that it not only lowers your blood pressure without the help of medications; it also aids you in having a life that is healthy, happier, and less stressful. This book chanced my life.

140/90 is a wee bit high. The lowest register (90 or diastolic) reading shouldn't be over 90, it is an early sign of hypertension or high blood pressure. Alcohol in moderation. It increases heart rate, thus increasing your B/P. See your doctor to make sure.

Yes, 140/90 is considered high according to the new guidelines. Someone already mentioned a good list of diet and exercise regimen......decrease salt intake/exercise (brisk walking 3x per week is a good way to start)
Alcohol....you are allowed 1-2 glasses of red wine per day. This will help increase your 'good cholesterol'.

This is considered a little over the borderline. My brother had a similar reading not long a go and today he is 125/80 simply from doing some yoga exercises and meditation and no medication whatsoever. Not bad huh. For a 58 year old.....

It's a little high, especially the 90 part. (For example, I'm 50, overweight, and my BP is 130/78.)
Consider increasing your activity level, and when it comes to alcohol stick to red wine. There's increasing evidence that red wine contains chemicals that are beneficial to your cardiovascular system.
