This doesn't make sense but his pediatrician knows his health history and I don't. Coughing is the body's way of clearing the airway and a response to irritation not to get rid of "germs", as was suggested. And cough medicine doesn't suppress a cough if it's an expectorant. I'd suggest you speak to another physician if this is group practice. If there is no medical contraindication for cough medicine - and I mean if your grandson has no medical conditions that could make this harmful to him - then buy a pediatric formula. If he has a loose, junky cough, get an expectorant. If the cough is dry, get a suppressant (nothing's going to be expelled anyway). Follow the directions to the letter. A cold mist humidifier may also help for nightime relief and comfort. Vick's chest rub is good too. Increase his fluid intake to prevent dehydration and to help thin and loosen bronchial secretions.

There some great pediatric cough medicines out there, ask the pharmacist for one with an expectorant in it. This will help thin down that mucous so he won't have to cough so hard to get it out. These kids also get dehydrated pretty fast during these respiratory illnesses which also makes it harder for them to get the mucous out. Get as much liquid into him as you can and chicken soup or broth will help too. It loosens the mucous and helps shrink swollen tissues. If he doesn't mind the shower, let him play in a warm steamy shower or use a vaporizer to also help loosen the crud. I can't believe that doc would just let him cough so much! I've worked with a lot of pediatricians and they would never have said that. Is the doc sure he doesn't have asthma? We are seeing it younger and younger now and it frequently is triggered by a respiratory infection.Good luck.

He can take a simple cough linctus. This is available for children of about 12months. You can also try this home remedy, the juice of a lemon mixed with a tablespoon of honey. warm it up a little. This I do for my children at home. I suggested this to another person here in answers and she says it worked for her son.

You first need to find out what is causing his cough.A reoccurring cough can be a sign of asthma even if no wheezing is present. But even with Asthma there are cough meds available to help relieve the coughing. You need to take him to the doctor if one isn't available take him to the e.r..It is better to be told nothing is wrong and have wasted your time at the doctors. Then something be wrong with him and you wasted valuable time doing nothing about it.

i would change doctors but in the mean time mix up some honey and lemon juice . Warm it in the microave and let him sip on it . If it sounds like he has junk in his lungs then Mucinex for kids is great . Not a cough medicine but it will get whatever is out . I seriously would get a different doctor though . here is the recipe for the honey and leomon

2 tbs honey to 1 tbs lemon juice . harm for like 10-15 secands mix and let him sip on it .

There are pediatric cough medicines with a lower dosage of alcohol in them. Your doctor is too old school and is obviously ignorant of modern cough medicines which can be taken by kids as young as 18 months.

Coughing is his body's way of pushing out the germs and bad stuff, and loosening up what is congested in his chest due to his cold. He will get better faster if he is allowed to naturally loosen this, and cough medicines prevent that. Try giving him lots of whatever he likes to drink (ginger ale or juices are good) and popsicles to help his throat from getting too irritated from coughing.

I would see a different doctor. Not only should you stop the cough, you need to figure out what is causing it.

You didn't mention if he had been sick recently. If not, you may want to consider that he have allergies or asthma.
