You are entertaining the adults at this event and should provide them with food you would like to eat.
As for the children, they love things like a cake that looks like an animal or a playground or something they can understand. Cupcakes are huge.
Make a sandbox in your backyard and have older kids perform for them, adult performers are scary to babies. Have baby animals like baby rabbits or puppies or other animals that are soft and snuggly but hearty enough to take abuse from a toddler. Baby chicks would not be a good idea without extreme supervision.
Contact a local pet store or farm if you live in the country, and see what they can do for you.
Keep it simple. You want to enjoy your child's first birthday party and mix it up with your friends. Chances are, whatever your child likes to play with every day is what the other children will want to play with too. At that age, they haven't a clue that this day is any different than any other.
Make sure you have lots of disposable cameras. Get them back from your guests and send each a set of all of them as a thank you for coming to your party. (If you can't afford this then post all of hteir pictures on a birthday website)

Will other 1 year olds be there or will it be older friends and family?
For the kids, play music or DVD of what ever the party theme is. If you are having a Wiggles party, pipe some of their music around the house. Put out some age appropriate toys for them to play with.
For the adults, chips and dip, maybe pizza or pizza bites. Not too much on entertainment for them, the party isn't for them.

too plenty interest would be complicated on the Birthday boy. shop it relatively uncomplicated. carry the occasion after the lunch hour yet properly earlier dinner and have a "cake and punch" occasion. Set out some bowls of chips in case you actual need some thing else to grant. With all of the commotion, the toddler gets cranky and drained speedy! not something worse than a cranky birthday toddler while attempting to get all of the astonishing thoughts on action picture!

A 1 year old won't know what is going on nor will he care. Invite close family and friends over, serve some sandwiches and sides, put up baloons and buy a cake. Dont forget to take pictures.

A clown would be good. Make a theme. What does your boy like? Jungle theme or superman theme? Have chips, juice or soda, a lil bit of candy and make sure you have some healthy food so other kids if they come wont get hyper.

Hot dogs, sandwiches (jelly or peanut butter), juice/milk..
balloons, musical chairs (depending if there are a lil older kids going to be there) or hot potato (where all the kids sit in a circle and you have a potato (not hot) and pass it around until the music stops. At the end there will be one child..give a dollar shop toy as their prize.
ENJOY*

All you need to do is a few sandwiches and a ton of balloons. Seriously, don't go mad with this, the children won't remember this day- whilst it's nice to have a party, it's more for the adults.

Give him empty wrapped boxes. They have more fun tearing off the paper at that age than whatever"s in the box. Finger food! Relax, he doesn't care.
