My dad always had a dodgy heart and died at 57. This worried me as I believe heart trouble is hereditary. Im now 50, never had a problem and kept myself reasonably active. I had a check up soon after my dad died, (aged 38) and the doctor said I had a healthy heart. The problem is, can hereditary heart problems occur as I get older?
My last check up was 3 years ago and the nurse did not give me an E.C.G. explaining it was not necessary as research showed even if my ticker was beating soundly there was nothing stopping me from rising of the treatment couch and literaly dropping dead.
Can anyone reassure me of what the probable out come could be considering their past experiences regarding this? I occasionaly exercise, I eat fibre, fruit and plenty of veg but must admit am slightly overweight.

Genes for cardiac disease are strong, but you can change some of your risk factors by not smoking, regular exercise, controling blood pressure, having regular cholesterol checks and making sure you are not eating trans fats.
You must be doing something right if you are healthy as the cholesterol imbalance shows up very young in heridetary coronary artery disease.

Will you get OF your, worrycart, enjoy life, you keep that attitude, and YOU will be pushing DAISIES, too soon.!!!! I had 3 trips to ICU with the 3rd time, a 85% chance of being carried out! Now i have stopped worrying, about anything, and my heart, is running at 120/80 for 3 years running, so loosen up and enjoy life

Of course hereditary plays a part in it. My mother and my sister (both dead) had bad hearts and I have high BP at the age of 41. But I am not overweight, 'tho I do not exercise as much as I should. You being overweight increases your chances anyway--regardless of your father.

I think your diet affects your heart, more than hereditary. What may look like hereditary heart disease may be due to eating the same diet as your parents! Watch your fat intake and keep moving to avoid your own problems! Good Luck!

Just be reasonable in caring for yourself and enjoy living. Worry eats up your time and piles on useless stress. If getting out of life alive were that important, more people would come back.
