It doesn't have to cost much to add some whimsy and style to the Thanksgiving table. Buy a large sheet of inexpensive fabric in an earth-tone color to cover the table. Don't waste money on fine linens. Add height and drama to the buffet by placing shoeboxes, coffee cans and other items under the fabric, then place the dishes on top of the raised areas.
*
If family members are bringing some of their signature dishes, note that by making a small menu board for the table. Put items on the menu such as Grandma's Famous Dressing or Uncle Sam's Yam Surprise and display the menu in a small picture frame.
*
Instead of fruit, create a cornucopia with rolled silverware. Use paper napkins with a Thanksgiving print on them to roll the silver.
*
Get creative with serving dishes. Use items with a fall theme such as a wicker apple basket to hold the bowl of mashed potatoes or a clean, new terra-cotta pot to hold fresh fruits and rolls.
*
Put nature on display in the table setting. Put a sprig of wheat on each place setting. Carve open a bell pepper, fill it with florist foam and add flowers to make a small vase. Use pine cones to hold the place name cards.
*
Don't stop with the table. Decorate a chandelier with vines and leaves for a fall theme.
*
Make the children's table special, too. Top the table with butcher paper and put out plenty of crayons. Children can trace their hands to draw turkeys, write down things they're thankful for or just draw pictures of flowers and write their names.

That is a VERY broad question.
Are you looking from the traditional, proper, table setting?
-If in that case, there's really no other way to set it without leaving the traditional setting.
Of course, you want your cups on the right-side, forks on the left, knife and spoons on the right. Covert plate in the middle with a bread and butter plate up top on the left (just over the forks).
The only thing you can really change-up about this traditional setting is the napkin. You can design it many different ways.
If that doesn't answer your question, I'm sorry. Again, it's a VERY broad question.

Watch Sandra Lee on the Semi Homemade show on the food network. That woman must have a warehouse filled with the items for hundreds of different tablescapes.
Theme tablescapes are easy. Football party? Slice a football in half, line it with plastic and fill it with dip. Fill the other half with chips. Along those lines you can let your imagination take over.
Use flowers on the stem as a placemat, use candles with a slit in them for namecards, tier your serving dishes at different levels.
Your question really is too broad.

A popular idea I've heard of is to bring out an eclectic mix of plates and serving dishes. They don't have to match at all, in fact the purpose is to make it mis-matched. Different colored plates that haven't been used in years, that salad bowl from the 60's, everyone has different glasses, none of the napkin holders match. I've seen it before and it's fun. People get to ask where certain things came from. It could be anywhere from your great grandmother to a yard sale!

Black tablecloth, white dishes, small glass vases with white (unscented) flowers and white candles. That's my new thing, anyway. Bed, Bath & Beyond have a huge selection of single-color tablecloths.

Color color color. It's all about color with me. My plates, bowls, cups and serving pieces etc. are all different bright colors as are the linens.
And always fresh flowers.
