Emphesema (I don't know how to spell it) or lung cancer????? My mother is 45 years old, and for the past 2 months she has been sick.. Having a horrible cough and usually hacking up flem.. She has been a smoker for 30 years, and she had throat cancer 6 years ago.. ( and very stupidly didn't quit smoking.) Also her father died of lung cancer, so it does run in the family... I have been trying to get her to go to the doctors for the past few weeks but she insist that it is only a cold and continues to use over the counter cold and cough meds, which are still NOT working.....

I should add that 80% of the time during this illness the coughing mostly affects her when she is resting....
Also she is 5'2 and weighs 100 lbs.

Any ideas on what it could be?... I fear the worst, but she refuses to go to the doctor...

Also when she found out about the throat cancer, it was because she was rally sick, and on Christmas Day 6 years ago stopped breathing for about 2-3 minutes.. she thankfully began breathing on her own again, but I had to drag her to the doctors office in order to find out what was wrong.... Her goiter was enlarged, and was blocking her wind pipe, adn the next time she stopped breathing, (she was told) it could very well have been her last... So needless to say she got to the doctor in the nick of time.... She is soooo stubborn!!!!!!!

I'm sorry your dealing with such a hard situation. Your right to try to get her to go to the doctor, but you can't make somebody do something that they don't want to do. I guess the best thing you can do is just be there for her and when she is ready to go, go with her. Good luck with everything.

Don't let up at all. She needs to see a doctor yesterday. She most likely is very scared at what they will say. Be there for her and try to get her to see a doctor.
