Miso is fermented soy bean paste. It doesn't really need to be refrigerated if you have miso in an airtight container or any kind of container. My mom( Japanese) keeps miso in a miso pot in a dark and cool area at room temperature all the time. But it's usually better to keep miso in a fridge.

Well, how you can check whether miso is bad or not is check the color of miso. When miso gets bad, the color of miso will change. The surface of the miso gets redder or sometimes gets some bluish or greenish mold.

Anyway, leaving miso out of the fridge overnight doesn't really make miso go really bad. You can still use it. Don't worry.

It's a fermented product and it would continue to ferment. The same is true of yoghurt. Use the sniff test.
