Mostly, it's called a chayote in English. Or a "chayote squash." Or a mirliton. Or occasionally I've seen recipes where they are called "vegetable pears" because they are pear-shaped. Once I saw a cookbook that said in Italy they're called something that translates into Zucchini-by-the-Hundreds because they grow so abundantly and are, in effect, a zucchini-like vegetable shaped like a pale-green pear. I cannot recall what cookbook this is in; it may be by Viana La Place or Marlene Spieler, but then again it might be some other cookbook writer.

2 tsp. dry thyme 12 oz. portobello mushrooms - sliced 3 yellow onions - sliced into thin rings 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1/2 c. water 1 chayote squashes - peeled, seeded and cut into 1/2-inch cubes 12 oz. dried penne pastas Fill a large pot 3/4 full with water and bring to a boil. Add the pasta and cook 10 to 12 minutes, until al dente. Heat the olive oil and water in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions, squash and pepper, and cook about 10 minutes or until the squash is almost soft and the onions are wilted. Stir in the mushrooms and cook 5 minutes more. Both the mushrooms and the squash should be soft. Remove 1 c. cooking water from the pasta pot, then drain the pasta. Add the thyme and cooking liquid to the vegetables. Combine the vegetables and pasta and serve at once.

In the superstore, fruits are usually selected much too soon. Some are rocks, many are bitter. Some of the fruit and vegetables are generally right (zucchini, onions, garlic, lettuce, greens, and a few others) so I'd have to go with vegetables.
