you should contact your doctor who tells you to stop. I am one of these people that got that rare side effect. What causes this rare but serious side effect. It was cramping and the pain from it would just make me stop moving basically. I am presently dieting eating very low fat diet and eating lots of beans in my diet. I want to know if I have a condition that makes my body prone to something that I should watch for. I get leg and back muscle cramps on the outside from time to time now. I only took that cholesterol med for 2 weeks.

The side effect is NOT from something being wrong with your body...it's from something being wrong with the medication!!! Stop taking it and stick your current diet.

I had the same problem. I have been on Lipitor, Zetia, Mevacor, Omacore, Welchol....all with the same problems within 2-3 weeks of starting it. It's hard to describe the pain to people, it seems to come from someplace way down - not just in the muscles. The muscle cramping/pain is a precursor to rhabdomyolysis which is that the muscles in your body are actually breaking down and being deposited in the liver, which can't filter properly because of the medication and you're being left with a very high level of toxins in your body - and thus, the pain. (This is what I believe after doing a lot of research).

Google "cholesterol myths" and "side effects of statins" and you will be AMAZED at the amount of information out there about why NOT to take cholesterol lowering medications !

Rare but serious???? Several people I know, myself included cannot take most Cholesterol meds. (Statins). I was on one and having not problems......one morning I woke up and couldn't walk, the muscles in my legs and hips were hurting so bad and I was so weak I couldn't stand. I called my Dr., and he had me come straight to the hospital. I quit the drug and a week or so later I was fine. I started a different medicine, it didn't affect me as bad but still had muscle cramps after a while so he had me stop that one too. I don't know how many altogether I have tried but 99% of them gave me side effects.

It is NOT rare to get them. It is not your body......it is the medication. Call your Dr.....
