Go with a pasta dish. Maybe veggie lasagna and add meatballs on the side, so your vegetarian friends can enjoy the meal too. Grab some garlic bread from the grocery deli, and ask them to make an antipasto platter as an appetizer. That way, you can really enjoy your son's big day, your guests and the party without being in the kitchen the entire time. It worked for me 3 times!

I have four children and love to have parties there are so many different options! I have done a hot dog "buffet" before. That is where you have a ton of nice hot dogs with all the deluxe condiments a person could want--cheese, onions, chili. I also served a nice fruit salad, vegetable tray, and several different chips. It was a real hit. I have done chicken Nugget centered buffets too! I have been to several very successful parties where pizzas were ordered to arrive just on time. A cold cut party where the guests all make their own sandwiches out of different sandwich fixings is also nice and you can have a crock pot full of soup on the side too.
I love to make wonderful dinners etc. but have found that the kids parties are more fun if the food is centered around the child's likes and dislikes--I mean they have to eat what we want the other 364 days of the year! I knew a mother who actually put a kids buffet down on the coffee tables and everybody had to graze for their lunch all over the house! She said it was hilarious and all of the guests thought it was pretty fun (yes they were mostly adults). Her selections were pretzels, goldfish, meat in child size cubes, fruit in non-choking size bits, crackers, cheese cubes. etc.
A one year olds party can be great fun especially if their mother is available to them during the party! So save the lovely adult dinners for another time and celebrate your kid!

Hotdogs, baked beans, and baked tater tots. A 1-year old party is kinda hard because I'm guessing that all the guests are the same age. Not to mention, a lot of foods they aren't ready to eat yet. Have PLENTY of cookies and crackers available and cheese. The kids will also LOVE the cake and ice cream too.

Like you said, the party is really for adults. I would make a coldcut and cheese platter and some hard sandwich rolls from the store and buy that the same day as the party and the day before, make pasta salad and potato salad etc. Also put out condiments like mustard, pickles etc. Don't forget chips!

What about Mexican food? Enchiladas, beans and rice.
I make chicken tacos by putting several frozen boneless chicken breasts in a large crockpot, cover with salsa and cook on high for 8 hours. Flake the chicken using a fork and throw in some tortillas, beans, rice, taco fixings (lettuce, cheese, sour cream, etc) and of course some chips and salsa. I'm making myself hungry!

Here's my recipie for a good b-day:
-Themed decor based on fav. TV show
- Chips & Dip
- Veggie dip
- Themed cake
If there are lots of kids, give goodie bags with like gum and stuff but if not, just leave it at that. Older kids 10-16 will play with the kids and watch them for you, if needed.

Kids aren't too picky. Pizza, hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken nuggets, corn dogs, macaroni and cheese...all these are good choices. Don't do anything to fancy or the kids will turn their noses up at it.
