I am almost vegan (I eat free range organic eggs) and I do not want to use animal products, but it is very hard to find fashionable shoes that are not made from leather, so I wanted to know if leather is made from the hides and skins of dead cows used for food, or are cows killed just to make leather?

Leather is a by-product of slaughter for meat.
Go to Pangea or Vegan Essentials and you
can find very nice vegan shoes of all styles,
as well as wallets, belts jackets, etc.
Also, most vegetarians and vegans aren't
slaves to fashion. We have a tendency to
create our own.

Leather is made from the hides of dead cows, and yes, generally from those cows that are killed for food.

Honestly, I think it's ideal for you to look for fashion that's made from other than meat by-products. I have a really hard time with the hipocrisy of people who don't eat beef, but walk around in leather jackets.

I don't think so, but often baby cows that are killed for veal are used to make leather goods. Check out cowsarecool.com There are lots of shops that sell fashionable non-leather goods. I struggle with this one too!

There are lots of nice imitation-leather shoes out there, if you look hard. Another option to consider (and this doesn't sit well with everyone!) is trying to find your "fashionable" leather items used. The theory being that the demand for the item is created by the person who bought it new, and subsequent owners are merely preventing waste. I'm not sure I buy into it myself, but it's something to think about and decide for yourself.

They are killed for both if not Bovine farming is even more cruel than we think. I have tonnes of man made shoes but I'm a girl it is easier to by synthetic shoes if you are a lady. Shiny patent leather is great on Jake Shears it is quite possibly a no no for the rest of the male species. 'Converse all stars' baseball boots are a timeless classic for everyone and what about trainers some trainers have man made uppers and soles !

first, with the whole "free range organic eggs".....let me educate you. the government does not regulate what can be "free range" and what can't. just because somthing has "free range" on it does not mean that it is truly "free range". and organic...psh, have you seen factory farms??? i suggest dropping eggs. that's my goal.

there are plenty of awesome shoes that arn't made of leather. you just have to look. i have some awesome shoes from Jurneys. it's all cloth and rubber....no leather. also, most converses have no leather. some shoes are made of canvas. just look around a bit.
your question about "leather is made from the hides and skins of dead cows used for food, or are cows killed just to make leather?" i'm not sure if i can answer that. sorry.

right down to the point, the whole cow is used. however, leather is the by-product of it. my sister is completely vegan, and says that it is okay to wear shoes made of leather. happy shoe shopping!

Cows are killed also fom making photographi gelatine, both for film and photographic prints, in some cases for making paper,, on the back of stamps, and a number of products that you cannot imagine.

Gelatin is a by-product, would you eat gelatin? I think leather should be thought of in the same light. You're not eating it, but you are wearing it, and in a small way supporting the beef industry. The more money they make selling by-products, the more money goes into the wallets of people not lifting a finger to change factory farm conditions.
