I wake up sometimes in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and find that my heart is just pounding. I don't feel anxious so I don't think it's anxiety. I also notice that it only happens on days when I'v had a glass of wine at dinner. I started noticing it around Christmas because we were drinking wine for a few nights in a row and then I just noticed it again this week, and realized that I had a glass of wine with dinner.

I have a very low tolerance for alcohol and can get tipsy on even one glass. Does this mean I am allergic to alcohol? Does this mean I could die of a heart attack if I drink? Why does it always happen late at night only? And only when I drink? I'm 38.

Alcohol can cause palpitations as well as dehydration, which also causes palpitations. I also have a low tolerance for alcohol...so when I DO drink, for every drink I have I follow it with a glass of water.

Keep yourself well hydrated and don't drink alcohol less than 4 hours before going to sleep and see if it makes a difference. If it does, than it's definitely the alcohol.

It probably means that your body has a harder time adjusting to the thinning of your blood, which is what happens when you drink. Just means your heart has to work a little harder to get the blood flow where it should be.
If you're very concerned, you should always check with a doctor and let him/her tell you what consumption amount becomes dangerous for your body.
