The phlegm can be from environmental irritants that you are breathing in or an upper respiratory infection. If it is an infection and you are feeling good otherwise, then your body is handling the infection well. The consistency is related to how much fluid you are taking in. If you are a little dehydrated, your body produces thicker mucus. Drink more water, the secretions will loosen and clear from your lungs faster.

RE:
What could hard, solid phlegm be a symptom of?
I've coughed up a couple small light yellow/green pieces of solid phlegm. The odor is awful. Is this a sign of something very serious?
In terms of general health, I feel fine. No coughing, swollen glands, short-breath, etc.

Hey, I tried to ask this question on my page and got the same ridiculous answers. This "hard phlem" has been coming up since I was about 12 and is not related to anything serious.
Not surprisingly, I had trouble picking a best answer on my page because none of them made sense. I checked out your answers, and all I can say is please do not stick chopsticks down your throat, this is definitely not lost food particles! My guess is that it's old mucous that stays in the lungs and hardens...though I can't seem to find out for sure. Sorry, good luck to you!

A friend of mine used to get that bartending being exposed to second-hand smoke. Are you living or around a smoker?
It is not a sign of something serious, but with everything, try to be aware of how much that is happening. I've seen that stuff. ICK!!!
And yeah, it so stinks!!! Smells like the bottom of a city dumpster, doesn't it? You'll be fine. Increase your water intake.

Could be anything ranging from sinus trouble to pneumonia. If phlegm is your only problem, I'd wait and see if it clears. If you experienc eany trouble breathing or have a fever, go to the doctor.

This is definitely gross. I suspect they are food particles that are lodging in lesions in your tonsils or throat. I used to pick them out of my tonsils with a chop stick I kept for that purpose. At age 35, I finally had a DR diagnose the problem and remove my tonsils. Look at the back of your throat with a flashlight. Sometimes you can see them.

It sounds like an infection. Get to the doctor a.s.a.p. (as soon as possible).
