The English are still shaking off a well deserved reputation for... well, really god awful food. There is hope though! Depending on what part of England you are going to there are a number of restaurants that now have traditional English fare that is "infused" with influences from around the "British Empire of Old".
My last trip there I had some of the best Jamaican Jerk Chicken I've had in years... twist was it was a traditional chicken breast served on a hogie roll.
The trick is you have to hunt this fare down if you're eating out, but it's worth the effort.
Dinner parties? You're on your own; there is no telling what delights you might encounter or horrors will visit your plate and palate.
Still, in the tradition of the First Royal Marines... "Stuff upper lip there, carry on chaps." Try to make the most of your trip. --Andy

Good traditional British food is really quite wonderful and, sometimes, experimental. It tends to be hearty, rich and flavoursome. The menus at St John restaurant in London would give you a decent idea (stjohnrestaurant.co.uk). Bad British food, though, is stodgy and bland; but this is probably true of most cuisines and I think our food has generally an unfairly bad press. It is probably worth bearing in mind, though, that your are at least as likely to get Italian, Indian, Thai or French (etc.) based cooking at a dinner party in the UK as traditional British-style cooking; or a mixture of the lot - if there is one thing these islands are good at, it's as a melting pot.

British food is mostly tasteless and the condiments are nothing at all like here in the U.S. Good luck with that

English food is the most unadventorous food in the world. It is also very bland.
