Its borderline. Officially 4 mmol/l and below is hypo; 4.5 mmol/l after eating is low. You need to increase the amount of carbhydrate you are eating. Go for wholewheat products for sustained blood glucose levels;
Assuming you are diabetic!

This may sound dim, but didn't your glucometer come with an instruction leaflet? That should tell you the normal ranges. Saying that though, my experience with Boots' leaflets leaves a lot to be desired...
4.2 is not a low blood sugar for someone who does not have diabetes, and with 4.5 after eating, it sounds as though your blood sugar is pretty stable.
You didn't mention whether or not you were diabetic, but considering you previously did not have a glucometer and you are unaware of normal blood glucose levels, I'm assuming you're not.
You could be shaky for many reasons. Perhaps you were dehydrated/low blood pressure/anaemic... perhaps your period is due, that always does it for me!
If it continues and you are worried though, the best thing to do is go to your doctor and get fully checked out. It could be anything.

RE:
Is a reading of 4.2 Low Blood Sugar?
I have had a shakey episode yesterday and purchased a Glucose meter from Boots and I had a reading of 4.2. I took it again at 9pm after eating at 7pm and it was 4.5.

I am writing to tell you what an incredible impact these methods had on my life! I have had type 2 diabetes for 27 years. For me, the worst part of this horrible disease is the severe pain I constantly get in my feet. The pain is so bad that I avoid standing and walking as much as possible. I've got to tell you that within the first month, my feet stopped hurting altogether and I can now walk totally pain free.
Believe it or not, I even danced at my niece's wedding last month, something I have not done in a many years. I've been following the book for six months now and my blood sugar is well within normal range. I feel great!
I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

It depends on what your personal tolerance levels are.
Generally, that's not viewed as a dangerously low blood sugar, but in someone like myself with severe hypoglycaemia, I'm feeling it at that point, and need to eat pronto!
Also, bear in mind that even if it's not a very low result, your sugar levels might have dropped fast enough for you to feel it, and that is why you were shaky.

If you don't have diabetes then no - you are ok don't worry! My boyfriend doesn't have diabetes and gets a bit like that when he's not eaten for a while - prob. just low on energy. If you do have diabetes you can easily feel hypo at 4.2 because when you get used to your blood sugar being higher than normal it can make you get hypo symptoms at higher blood sugars.

Many common natural remedies are claimed to have blood sugar lowering properties that make them useful for people with or at high risk of diabetes. Learn here https://tr.im/e8eir
A number of clinical studies have been carried out in recent years that show potential links between herbal therapies and improved blood glucose control, which has led to an increase in people with diabetes using these more 'natural' ingredients to help manage their condition.

4.2 isn't low for fasting, and not low for 2 hours after food, you are NOT a diabetic, but to put your mind at rest you should see your doctor as there is a rare condition where the body produces too much insulin. Huggywell, your figures are correct FOR DIABETICS, but not for 'normal' people.

between 4 and 7 is within normal range. You can become shaky for many reasons such as lack of food, drink, too much sugar in diet which gives a quick burst of energy

Nothing to worry about. Why not ask your GP to check you for diabetes, if that worries you, at least you'll have your mind put at rest.
Could be lots of things, dehydration, lack of sleep, not eating properly, stress . . .
