Remember when you started smoking? it most likely made you sick, until you got used to it. The way out of the addiction is much like that. Yes, if you can bear with the craving, the drooling and the nerves, you can do it cold turkey. Or if you want to ween yourself it may be easier on you. Keep cutting down on how many times you can smoke in a day. Then continue cutting down until you get down to 3 cigarettes a day, make your own schedule, and then quit the 3 cigarettes "cold turkey" . Since most of the nicotine will be out of your system this may be easier on you. Then stay away from smokers and the smoking environment for some time, until you are not able to stand the smell, and it actually makes you sick. You will know that you are free, and will not need to smoke ever again. It is of great help to find something to keep your hands busy with: a hobby , like drawing, painting, knitting, woodworking , typing or whatever is in you interest, the habit of using your hand and fingers to smoke also needs to be broken or substituted. Stay with it and keep trying. It will be the best thing you did for yourself and your family, and best of luck

I am a smoker of 17 years. I also started to be "cool". I don't feel so cool anymore. I feel like an outsider. Anyhow I have some ideas but I haven't really tried it out for I want to quit yet I enjoy smoking even though I know the risks. I am going to mention one risk for you are a smoker and you know if not all most of them. Peradontil (unsure of spelling) disease. This is where the teeth will become weak and fall out. Lack of flossing will cause this but smoking speeds up the process. Ok now some ideas I have not tested... Find something you enjoy doing to keep your hands busy such as forming pottery, coloring, painting. Do anything you can think of to keep busy. Watchout for triggers such as drinking and smoking or coffee and smoking, driving and smoking. I could give you a million triggers that I have. My Step Mom used chantex to quit smoking. It worked for her but it is not an easy road. She took her medicine, chewed on straws and would ask me for smokes. I refused to give her any. I would tell her sorry I don't have any on me. She knew I was not being truthful, but was gratful later. My point here is I hope you have friends who can do the same for you instead of being an enabler. Chantex blocks the receptors that the nicotine locks into. It is not by any means a magic pill. You will have to work at it. My step mom has stoped the behavior part of smoker but she still needs nicotine. She doesn't smoke but she does chew on the nicotine gum. I think sometimes stopping the behavior and then the addiction is the way to go. Think about... After dinner do we really crave a smoke or do we just enjoy having one after dinner. Driving down the road do we really crave it or do we just get bored. Ofcourse cravings are there if we wait long enough. Anyhow, since you have been smoking quite some time try stopping the behavior but still get your nicotine fix. (such as nicotine gum.) Chantex is only given for a certain amount of time and then your done. Afterwards if you feel like you just have to have a cig. go get the gum. Your doctor should be able to help you with a plan. Myself I guess I need to work on will power. I feel I am under control of the nicotine. As far as will power I don't have a clue how to get myself back in control. All I know is my son was upset because I wouldn't go on a school trip on the bus because I knew I couldn't smoke. I also couldn't take home some silly little ginnipig becasue the teacher wouldn't let it live in a smokers house. My little boy hurts everytime when I choose addiction over him because he doesn't understand. (you may want to keep that in mind for your children or future children.) Good luck to you! I know how bad this addiction can be. I know it can be done because even though I haven't given it a serious try others have and suceeded.

If you are serious, the drug Chantix is a nicotine receptor blocker and is now available with a prescription. It has very few side effects and it makes cigarettes taste bad and you derive no pleasure from them and you begin to see what a habit it is. I quit on Chantix and there was essentially no withdrawal. It cost about 110.00/month and you take it for 3-6 months at most and it works!!!! Cigarettes cost more than that! Best drug I've ever tried.
Pfizer has a toll-free number and a website about it. Give it a try

Although the patches may help you get over the physical addiction to smoking....nothing beats cold turkey quitting. The physical addiction only lasts 3 days...the mental addiction is for much longer, if not forever. So, just take it one day at a time...know that after three days it's all mental and eventually (like after 2-3 weeks) the smell and taste of a cigarette will make you noxious. Good luck!

Get a prescription from a doctor for Zyban or Welbutrin. They both work, there's no nicotine in them & neither is addictive as long as you stop taking them after you quit smoking, usually within 8 weeks. Zyban is not covered by insurance but Welbutrin is covered by most & they're actually the same pill.
