Plain water is fine for vodka, but I wouldn't use tea for brandy because it will mold and turn cloudy. I would use food coloring for Brandy or Bourbon. Some experimenting with red and green should give you a good color of brown.
The above applies only if this is your cabinet. In any other situation you should be honest and tell the other person you have a problem.

Yes, you could. This would only, however give the appearance of fully stocked and the deception would be revealed as soon as someone takes a bottle and pours a shot. If your intention is to hide the fact that you have emptied these bottles yourself, you will eventually get caught in the lie. If your intention is to look wealthy, as in well-stocked, you are worrying way too much about appearnaces.

No. Why not stock the real stuff? It is like having fake books on your bookshelf, or those losers that wrap a $100 bill around a wad of singles.

That's ok for decorating but not for entertaining. What happens when the person asks for a drink with vodka or brandy? Awkward.

Ummm. .You CAN, it would work I guess unless someone was very closely examining. But why would you? I guess if you're in a rush to make something look full, and can't afford to just buy more, than sure. . .
