I've been having a problem as of late, I'm going to start college in a few days, and I wake up during the middle of the night shaking.. as if I'm having a panic attack... my heart is racing and I have problems breathing. I have these off and on, and now I'm having trouble sleeping.. I sleep maybe 4 hours a night if I'm lucky. When I'm awake during the day I'm not worried about anything more than usual... but my body seems to be going through a lot of stress. I'm a virgin and I'm a week late for my period, and I keep having these anxiety attack symptoms. Any idea whats up with me?

I've also been sick for the past month with some kind of sinus infection, I have no health insurance so I've been trying to get rid of it on my own.. I notice from time to time I get short of breath and dizzy, and I also get stabbing pains in my lungs that don't allow me to inhale/exhale correctly.

Oh, and I don't think its bronchitis because I'm not coughing up any mucus... I'd like to go to a doctor, but I'm not sure if this could be anxiety related or not..

Well, a good bit of it probably is related to some anxiety about starting college. It's normal and natural to be a bit anxious about major changes in our lives, and going to college for the first time is a big change. Things certainly aren't being helped by the sinus problem, I'm sure. The period could be late due to the stress and the illness both, cycles are hormone driven but affected by stress, anxiety and illness. Your college probably has a student health clinic where you could be seen, usually free of charge or for a small fee. That would probably be worthwhile to check out, to have a doctor examine you and see what can be done for the sinus infection. Once you actually start classes, you will be able to relax and sleep, and the cycle should straighten itself out. A lot of women experience cycle mishaps during the first semester, mostly due to the stress and changes, and they even themselves out within a few months. In the meantime, a steam facial and a decongestant should help the sinus problem by encouraging drainage. If you wake up in the night, resist the urge to get up and don't worry about the other things- the shaking and heart. Those are aggrivated when we become conscious of them, and will both resolve easier if you don't get too wound up about them. Try to do some exercise in the late afternoon to help physically tire yourself, and spend some quiet time for the hour prior to turning in for the night. A nice warm bubble bath, or some lavendar aroma oils/candles set up a relaxation mode before bed and work for most folks who need to de-stress before sleep. As corny as it sounds, warm milk- even in the form of cocoa or chocolate milk, does work as well. If you can hang in there until the classes start, you should find things fall into place for you and you sleep better at night. The physical symptoms will also ease up, although the sinus problem will need some treatment. Good luck with the classes, and remember- chill, you are still very normal.

You should be happy to know that your symptoms are all pointing towards anxiety and panic attacks. You may think its strange me saying you should be happy - but anxiety & panic attacks are something you can overcome, insted of a serious physiological disease.
I was diagnosed with anxiety and panic attacks approx 3 years ago. It was a time where i was facing a lot of change and uncertainty - like yourself at this period of your life.

Please believe me when I say you can overcome this, and move on and realy enjoy the next phase in your life.
What you should do (this is what I did to overcome panic attacks)

Talk to someone senior that you trust, or a counsellor, or health professional This will give you a little guidedance and piece of mind that you Really are fine! Your local GP is also helpful.

Engage in daily exercise, this activiates endorphines. Furthermore exercise gives people a general feeling of well being and control. It is scientifically proven that exercise helps manage anxiety!
Try to avoid too much coffee as it is a stimulant, also - watch your alcohol consumption. A social drink once or twice a week is fine, but don't self medicate with alcohol. Many individuals with anxiety do, it dosn't help - trust me!

Do a little research on the net about anxiety and panic attacks so you can understand a little more about the nature, symptoms, management.
At the end of the day, anxiety is only a state of mind, just like the feeling of happiness! The more you focus your attention and mind on positive things such as your physical health and being busy the less time and energy you have for anxious thoughts! This is a very common experience, and one you can overcome.
Best wishes and enjoy college!

Sounds to me like you could have an infection that has spread from your sinus through the rest of your body..Please see a doctor ASAP..A sinus infection is nothing to mess around with..it can cause serious health problems..I am not trying to scare you it's just I have seen this first hand and it wasn't pretty..
I don't have medical insurance but if I was having these issues I wouldn't care about the money..Go to an ER if thats your only option..You may be having panic attacks also..But please address the sinus thing NOW! Take Care!!!

Your list of stressors includes starting college, financial troubles and I could mindread that you are pretty light on love life/sexual satisfaction. It seems pretty clear that you internalize stress, storing it in your body and then you get hit with the bug that's going around. Insomnia and interrupted sleep is consistent with acute, persistent anxiety.

First of all you ain't broke. All that's going on is that no one ever gave you an owners manual for your brain. You were trained to look for problems or threats in your life, by people who loved you and were just trying to protect you. You need to learn the skill of paying attention to what is going right and what is pleasureable for you in your life.

If I were in such a predicament, I would put college off for one semester, go to a Time Line Therapy hypnotist to clean out all my fear, anger, guilt, hurt and sadness, go swimming every day, learn yoga, listen to live jazz once a week while drinking ice cold Strongbow, get laid, buy new clothes and have Timothy's private blend coffee for breakfast every day.

Sorry however staying busy isn't going to "medication" nor eliminate your nervousness. That might be like telling you to simply pull your self up via your bootstraps or in different phrases "recover from it". Anxiety is a truly health problem and demands certain concentration earlier than it will get worse. I might enormously propose you looking for a moment opinion. You won't always must take drugs however a few form of healing demands to be sought out so you'll get to the basis or what's inflicting the nervousness. There are a few very moderate, non addictive drugs to be had for nervousness comparable to Buspar however just a Dr. will likely be ready to inform you what's fine for you. I do desire you are going to get the aid you wish to have and deserve alternatively of ready to simply must get aid later while matters are probably worse. I want you the fine~
