No surgery is safe. That's why you sign your life away before they operate on you. However, if you do not have by-pass surgery and you need it, you will die fairly soon. The procedure is done thousands of times a day. Find the best Doc in you town/city get him/her to accept you as their patient. The best Docs work at good hospitals and command good staff assignments. It will work out well for the patient 75-87% of the time.

Coronary artery bypass surgery is very common these days and greatly increases the chance survival for a person with significant blockages in the coronary arterys. With all surgery there are risks, but the chance of dying is very uncommon from my experience as a cardiacthorasic nurse. Your surgeon should be happy to explain all risks and statitics related cardiac bypass surgery.

Bypass surgery is quite common now, and they are quite advanced technologically. They are pretty safe if practiced by a good doctor, and once again, the chances of dying, if the surgeon is good, are quite small. If the surgeon isnt very practiced then the chances of fatality increase a lot.

What kind of surgery are you getting? different surgery's have higher risks. Im getting an Aortic Valve Replacement and an aortic graft and the risk of the aortic Valve replacement is only 5%(im not sure about the aortic graft) but other surgeries can be as high as 50% sometimes higher. And every surgery has risks, and things can go wrong, some are only a small chance but they can still happen. Good luck with your surgery.

My CABG took place on 2nd October, 2006. The hospital was visited, and I asked them to provide me statistics, and I was amazed to see taht less than 1% fatalities took place, and those too with patients having other complications (Diabetic/Kidney failure etc.)
I live in Pakistan and was operated at Punjab Institute of Cardiology, Lahore, Pakistan. Thsi Hospital normally has 150 operations (open heart surgery) in a month.
I have no idea about yours area, but teh more operations a hospital do, the more is the expertise.
Please ensure taht beating heart surgery (off pump technique) be utilized, as it has less complications after teh operation.

Weight loss surgery-like gastric bypass /lap band surgery / stomach stapling and gastrectomy have become very common and very safe now. My cousin got her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in India. She has lost more than 65 lbs in 5 months and is very happy with the results. The price for obesity surgery is very less in India. My cousin just paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America. She got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your Obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.
