Hi, I have smoked 20 a day for 8 years now, but for the 1st half of the day, I find myself coughing up thick brown stuff. I'm just wondering if this is anything serious? Also, when I lie down, for example in bed, my left lung seems to be raised-I cant get comfy as it seems like there's something sticking in underneath.

Thanks a lot

Smoking paralyzes the cilia in your lungs. The cilia function as kind of a continuous broom to remove all that junk int your lungs. While you are smoking they remain paralyzed, but when you are sleeping, they have a chance to start working again, hence the crap you are coughing up. Smoking that much will also cause overinflation of the lungs and air trapping. This could be a reason why you are not so "comfy.'

It's a sign of reduced Lung capacity. If you Smoke, THAT would explain It. If you Don't, then you probably have latent Bronchitis, & you should be checked out by a Doctor.

its just your lungs trying to clear themselves so fresh air can come in. this jelly like substance clogs the lungs and cuts your oxygen flow. Remember your organs function on oxygen so the more carbon dioxide you pump in the quicker you get to die. Quit smoking live longer or smoke more its your choice I quit 21 years ago Have a nice day

Don't you think it's time to quit !! If you can't on your own ask your Doctor to prescribe Chantix, it's a new medicine to quit smoking.

Eeew! It's tar build up in your lungs! It's your body trying to rid itself of the filth you're putting in it. Please, seriously consider quitting!
