Syphilis is an infection caused by a bacteria, Treponema pallidum. Its a pretty nasty infection, it has three stages. Primary, secondary and tertriary.

Primary- open sore/ aka cancre that looks nasty but does not hurt.

Secondary- A rash that can spread throughout the body

Tertiary= occurs later in life, believed that it may actually be an autoimmune disease caused by an earlier infection, it causes tissue and bone destruction and even dementia.

The bacteria that causes syphilis is interesting because it has been around since ancient times but still cannot be cultured outside the human body.

Also in is still susceptable to the first penicillins developed [ex penicillin g]

There is a ton of information about this STD.. and all of this is off of memory but see the wiki article for more info.

Syphilis is infact an STD you can aquire the disease through sexual contact. I am not sure of all the details of it, I think it can be cured (I don't have a source for the statement though)
but I do know that it can cause blindness.
