Could be you have chest congestion, try Mucinex. But I really advise you to get a second opinion.

if you are only young, it could well be asthma. if you are 40+ or a heavy smoker then demand some tests. Although a cough can last weeks after a virus has left your body, and the pain in you chest may well be due to the strain of coughing.
if your symptoms are a cough which is mostly at night it is probably asthma. ask your GP to do a peak flow assesment on you . check out this self diagnosis website.

i had the same symptoms around 2 weeks ago and still have a slight cough now, the only two things i could find that helped me was sudifed <-----spelling? and vitamin c tabs, the sudifed in my stated you can only buy behind the counter now and have to show id to get it, i have and am still having pains in my right side but just been dealing with it, most likely i figured i pulled a muscle coughing so much or something

If they haven't done one get an x-ray. My son had that pain after a bout of bronchitis. X-ray showed. He had air trapped in the lung on the painful side. A round of steroids and a few nebulizer treatments cleared it up.
