RE:
Is it true that Ribena isn't suitable for vegetarians? Why's that?

If it says that on the can, then it does have something derived from some sort of dead animal. Like gelatin comes from hooves, for example. Actually some plants are fertilized with animal products, so no doubt have similarities to coca cola in that respect, but maybe that's carrying pickiness to an extreme.

Given that there's a Vegetarian Society out there recommending it (as a source of vitamin B12), I'd say you were lied to.

(See also http://www.veggies.co.uk/veglist.php3)

Though. There is something called "Ribena Twist," which apparently contains cochineal. Original Ribena's fine, though, and I know very few vegetarians who lose sleep over cochineal.

See http://jainworld.com/jainfood/readinglabels.asp (not, of course, guaranteed to be accurate)

And http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochineal

Don't think so.... the only thing i can think of is that it may have something like gelitine in it.

Once picked up chocolate moose in Tescos thinking ahh that will be fine (im vegitarian) only to get home and see pork in the ingredients. PORK! not gelitine but pork, how on earth do you get the idea for that recipie! I can see it now

"hey Bill have you come up with a new recipie for those chocolate mooses yet"

"Yeah, I thaught i add a twist by adding a little pork"

WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH THEIR MINDS!!!!

First of all Ribena is made from Black Currant juice not blackberrys, I have bought it for years in Canada, in Chinatown, it's from Hong Kong but is the best, I used it when I was a chef I used to use it as a base for sorbet.

And I also used it with a duck dish, and a jar of black currant preserves from Poland, it had lots of whole fruit in it and made the best duck with Port and black currant sauce, won me a mention in the newspaper as one of the best dishes in Victoria B.C.
