If you get cold sores by your mouth, then you have herpes simplex type-1. Herpes simplex type-2 is genital herpes.
Most people get herpes type-1 from being kissed by elderly relatives when you are a child. 80% of the adult population has herpes type-1.

There are two different forms of the herpes virus. Type 1 causes cold sores (oral region) and is the most common. Type 2 is the sexually transmitted genital herpes complex. However, both forms can be transmitted by skin to skin contact.

HSV-1, also known as cold sores or fever blisters and
HSV-2, which is Genital Herpes.
However both can cause Genital Herpes.

It means you have the herpes I virus. Most everyone does. It is possible to infect your genitals with hsvI by touching lips and then genitals. HSVII is the common genital virus.
