My friend did the 80s theme for her husband. We didn't have dressing up - its a bit much to ask great aunty Matilda to dress up like Madonna!
She had a cake made in the shape of a rubix cube - very effective, and plenty of 80s music. The centrepiece of the food table was a whole pineapple which was spiked with loads of sausage on sticks and cheese and pineapple.
Nothing too naff, but a nice subtle theme.
For my 30th I had an open house type party. We told people to come any time from 3pm, so that the oldies and friends with kids could come along and have a chat, they all left by about 8pm, my younger friends started coming at about 6 or 7, and the party went on til about 1am. Really successful.

Fancy dress of some kind and take all the yellow/white lights out of the house and replace with low light coloured ones and UV lighting... (actually if you black bin liner and blue tack the walls you can get amazining effects with UV wool like lasers and a uv light on the cheap and toss in a smoke machine for atmosphere.
Say school disco, pantomine, toga and roman theme (inc linoness catsuits, vestal virgins and gladiators etc,) Moulin Rouge, (get the can can music), Superheros and villans, etc.
Seroiusly look at the atmosphere as clear air and bright lights kills parties and with smoke colured light beams show up and people less self concous on dance floors.
Twister could be fun and drinking games in place

For a really great party that covers all ages go for the favourite story or nursery rhyme character, and then everyone can be their favouite childhood hero, no matter how old, so you could have Harry Potter next to Little Bo Peep. You could also ask guests to bring their favourite colour wine or cake, and theme it that way. Happy Birthday and good luck!!

How about a James bond theme. There are loads of possibility's for dressing up glamorously for the girls, and you might even get the boys to dress up to. You could even hire a fun casino to entertain the guests.

A rainbow party!!!
every comes dressed up in a mixture of bright fun outfits its so much fun and the photos look brilliant because of all the colours
think men in white suits pink shirts!,colour full ties!hawian shirts, shorts with red socks!ladies in red dresses, couloured ribbons in there hair, lots of sequins, pattered tights!coloured hair/wigs!
its good for all those people who don't like dressing up because they can just wear a coloured top but its great for people who like to dress up too as they can go all out!
for games i would do some of the classics such as musical bumps, statues!pass the parcel is all ways a favorite as every one like the chance of a prize,
bingo is a good game to.
if its on a saturday on the way in u could give out lottery tickets and then u could get the dj to read out the numbers!(fantastic as it gets every one excited)but depends on how many guests as its a pound per guest.
u could make party bags, for ladies small sample perfume, bubbles, lip gloss!
for men, sample after shave,yo-yos,other toys puzzles!!
hope these ideas help a bit enjoy your party

Make like a 70's theme- have everyone dress up in clothes from that era- I think that would be fun. Good luck with your party!

Why don't you sort your guests into say three teams and send them on a treasure hunt to find for instance the place you're dining or a treasure trove of some sort (just because it's your birthday it doesn't mean that you can't give away something). Great fun, and it's particularly good if people don't know each other very well because this require that they talk to each other and co-operate to win....

i had an 80's theme to one of my birthdays, but you could consider 60's or 70's? everyone had to come as a popstar from the era and i just played all my old cd's, it was a blast!

All have a fancy dressmaybe as the years you where born - 70's / 30's. and choose who has the best outfit for different era's - sounds quite fun.
Or you could be outragous and have a vicars and s**ts fancy dress.
