It doesn't affect me in speaking, and I can still sing OK, but I don't feel I've got as much power as I used to. I'm not a professional singer, or ever had lessons. I only sing once a week (in church) and with the children at home sometimes.

Honey, lemon juce and hot water works wonders or you can add a little whisky to it. Another one is to gargle with diluted peroxide but check the strength to use with your pharmacist.

Your situation sounds exactly like mine. I sing only at church these days, no voice lessons, sing to the radio with my son, etc. I used to sing in a community chorus of 90-100 members with a pretty heavy concert schedule when my kids were small - my husband stayed with them in the evenings. No time for that now that they're older, someone always needs to be fed or driven somewhere!

I will tell you that I have put on some weight the last few years, and that has definitely affected my breath control and support. My allergies have also gotten worse since I've gotten older, I'm almost 50 and I think menopause has affected my allergies, which affects my voice. Menopause has also lowered my range, so that I am really a mezzo soprano now, where in high school I used to have a range of 3 octaves. Does anything here apply to your situation? I know that some singers swear by warm lemon juice and water - not to be gross, but it seems to cut the phlegm. Also, dairy products will create more gunk in your throat. So try some of those ideas, and happy singing!
