This really is a very good and thought-provoking question. A vegetarian means a person who consumes only plant food. The plant food may be fruits, nuts or leafy vegetables; raw or cooked, it doesn't matter. But a real vegetarian is one who consumes plant food without killing the plants. That's more important. For example, certain spinach varieties are sold in the market by completely uprooting them from the ground. A real vegetarian takes the food from a plant without destroying its very existence. You can eat a mango by plucking it from the tree. You can eat a spinach by plucking the leaves but not by destroying the complete plant. "Live and let live" should become the motto of a real vegetarian. Thatswhy our ancient rishis pick up the fruits fallen from a tree instead of plucking them directly from the tree. They do not want to cause pain to the tree. Of course, we need not go to that extreme but one can practice vegetarianism within the extents possible to him/her.

A vegetarian is a person who does not eat meat or fish. They instead eat vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans and grains. Some vegetarians eat or drink some kinds of things that come from animals, like milk and eggs.

Vegetarians may do this because they think it is wrong to kill animals, or because they think eating meat is bad for their health. Some may do this because of their religion. Another reason people are vegetarians is because they think it is good for the world. This is because land used for animals can be used to grow food. Also the modern meat industry often keeps many animals in a small area, which causes pollution problems and lowers the quality of life for the animals.

People who only eat plants are called vegans. Vegans also often will not use animal products like leather, but many vegetarians do use animal products.

Some people who eat fish but not meat from land animals may also say they are vegetarians.
