I have friends who are from Pakistan. They want to make some of their native food, but don't have access to a stove. I wonder if rice, lentels and such things can be cooked in the microwave or in a crockpot or slow cooker. I am also looking for quick ways to make Indian/Pakistani food. Thanks much!

Yes you can cook rice in the nukker. There should be directions on the bag, but I do it with the same water:rice ratio that I use on the stove and nuke it for 17 minutes, covered. I don't know about lentels, but I would think not since lentels are beans which explode.

I cook rice in the microwave all the time. In a large microwavable bowl, biggest you can it into your mircro so it doesn't boil over, add one cup raw rice, two cups water, and a little salt and butter. Cover loosely, then microwave on high for 6 minutes, medium for 15 minutes...let stand for 5 and then fluff with a fork. It will come out great! I make lentil soup all the time but not in the microwave...on the stove top...so I can't help you there.

Yes as I recently found out myself. For rice put the suggested amount of water and rice in a microwave safe bowl and cover it. I just used a second bowl and put it on top of the first bowl and microwave for 10 minutes, stop it every 2.5 minutes and give it a stir. The same cooking method should work fine for lentels.

Yes you can cook rice and lentils in the microwave. Just cover with water and cover the pot. Turn several times during cooking to ensure even heating.

My rice takes about 10 minutes. I do not like lentils because I cannot digest them (wonder why?) but each microwave oven is different so your friends need to check the instruction book and the packet.

I think we do not use our microwaves enough (myself included!)
I am hopefully getting one for my birthday (which is to day) but we have to go and look for one. I am living in a hostel situation so my resolution is to research into it and use it alot more. Beats cleaning up everyone Else's mess before I can cook my own!

I cook rice in the microwave all the time but lentils I think you would want a small crock pot also, they sell small rice cookers that steam the rice just right that might be something to look into as well as maybe a 2 burner hot plate. good luck

As you have been told, it's pretty east to make rice in the microwave, but I'd suggest cooking the dal in the crockpot.

Dal is simple too. tell your friends to boil the lentils with tomato onions garlic green chili etc in the MW until soft and well cooked. then in a separate bowl heat the oil in MW till very hot then add the dry spices they want for the 'Tadka' ( like cumin seeds mustard seeds dry red chili/ green chili etc. heat oil again for 15 secs. Pour over Dal and Voila! Dal is ready!

I do my rice, usually white long-grain, in the nuker all the time. In a large glass bowl, put one cup rice, two cups water, salt and pepper, herbs or other flavorings if you want. Nuke on high six minutes. Then nuke on 60 per cent power for 11 minutes. Let it sit a bit, check and see if it needs another minute.

yes rice can be cooked most easily in the microwave, just follow instructions, lentils tend to boil over,so you would need to use a large bowl,a drop or two of cooking oil added to boiling lentils is a good idea,it enhances the taste & cooks better & faster too.you would need to stir up the boiling lentils a couple of times to prevent it frothing & boiling over, rest is easy.
