It is called referred pain. It can radiate into the left arm, the jaw and into the back. Women don't display these symptoms like men do though. They can have very vague symptoms such as a hot tingling in their chest. In my 6 years in cardiology, I have seen very few women with the classic left arm pain.

It's usually due to the lack of blood and hence oxygen supply to your body parts (such as your heart).

Pain radiates most often to the left arm, but may also radiate to the lower jaw, neck, right arm, back, and epigastrium, where it may mimic heartburn.

That is not completely understood by the medical community yet. It is called "referred pain" as in pain perceived in an area far from the origin. Such as Kidney to groin or Stomach to upper Spine. Pretty much still half a mystery.

Maybe they should be called arm attacks instead of heart attacks.
