ACE inhibitors like Prinivil have been proven to protect kidneys from further damage in people with diabetes. They also help to prevent heart problems.

Of course, it is a blood pressure lowering agent, and if your blood pressure is normal or low to begin with, then you should be starting on a low dose and gradually increase the dosage to the highest dose you can tolerate without feeling light headed or dizzy.

Some people can only tolerate a tiny dose because otherwise they will feel light headed upon rising. Even a small dose is thought to be helpful to prevent kidney damage.

Make sure your doctor checks your kidney function and potassium level within a couple weeks of starting the Prinivil.

You have to begin eating a healthy diet - fresh fruits and vegetables (both raw and cooked), small amounts of protein, whole grain cereals and bread, skim milk and yogurt; increase your water intake dramatically; begin an exercise program - walking is easiest - start slowly for short distances and then gradually increase your pace and distance until you are walking a minimum of 30 minutes per day at a brisk pace. Your weight will come down as will your blood pressure.
