To all the type 2's responding: STOP IT! This is a type 1 question.
Dear asker,
I feel for you because the exact same thing happened to me. Humulin Ultralente was a superb insulin. I can't believe those moron drug companies stopped making it. It is discontinued in the US as well. They probably stopped making it because it was cheaper than Lantus or Detemir.
Humulin NPH sucks. It acts too fast and is done too quickly. That is the reason I switched to Ultralente many years ago. Then I was forced to make a choice between Lantus or NPH. Well, forget the NPH. I tried Lantus, however, 'they' say you can't mix it with Humalog. So my quantity of shots went from 2 a day to 4 to 6 times a day. Nice.
Then the Lantus started making me sick, and it didn't last as long as advertised.
My last resort was Detemir (Levermir, whatever, Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, WTF??!! Use one frikkin' name).
This Detemir insulin seems to be ok for me, but I miss the Humulin U for the reduced quantity of injections and low cost.
If Lantus doesn't pan out, try the Determir.

I am writing to tell you what an incredible impact these methods had on my life! I have had type 2 diabetes for 27 years. For me, the worst part of this horrible disease is the severe pain I constantly get in my feet. The pain is so bad that I avoid standing and walking as much as possible. I've got to tell you that within the first month, my feet stopped hurting altogether and I can now walk totally pain free.
Believe it or not, I even danced at my niece's wedding last month, something I have not done in a many years. I've been following the book for six months now and my blood sugar is well within normal range. I feel great!
I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

The trend where I have worked is to use Humalog or Novolog before each meal and sliding scale if needed outside those times, and use Lantus at bedtime. My husband does this also and has had good control even though he cheats on the diet end of it. Yes, they are expensive, but you may qualify for the medications right from the companies (Lilly makes Humalog and Sanifi-Aventis makes Lantus) Go to www.needymeds.com they have the forms to fill out to apply for the patient assistant programs. If you can qualify they will supply your insulin for free. You doctor fills out part of the forms and you fills out part. The guidelines are pretty generous. Good luck!

I'd say an insulin pump with a fast acting insulin like humalog or novolog is the only way to go. I've been on a pump for 5 years and it's been the best thing in the world. all my A1c's are down at 6 and i feel great. I'm personally using a MiniMed paradigm. It's great. it does all my calculations for me and estimates all my doses. Also with this pump I'm on a program called the pathway, where i can get the next upgraded pump for a minimal price, right now i'm at the stage with a continuous gloucose monitor, and it's great. It's a little expensive, but in the long run it's totally worth it, you'll be healthier and live a better life.

I agree that Lantus is very expensive. It is VERY good though. It is a very long term acting insulin, and as far as insulin goes, did the best at regulating my blood sugars. For an oral medication, what used to work best for me was a medication called Rezulin, which is discontinued in the United States.

I am a type 1 and this is what I take. 30 units of lantus in the am. 15 units of lantus at bed. For my meals I take novolog based on what I am eating. Typically I take 1-2 units at breakfast, 3-4 at lunch and at dinner anywhere from 6-10. That is working for me. My aic's at anywhere from 5.9-6.2
