It's a delicacy but i CAN'T bring myself to eat it...supposed to be very popular over there though.

A balut (or Hột vịt lộn in Vietnamese) is a fertilized duck egg with a nearly-developed embryo inside that is boiled and eaten in the shell. They are considered delicacies of Asia and especially the Philippines, China, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Popularly believed to be an aphrodisiac and considered a high-protein, hearty snack, baluts are mostly sold by street vendors at night in the regions where they are available. They are often served accompanied with consumption of beer. The Filipino and Malay word balut(balot) roughly translates to mean "wrapped".

I actually LOVE balut. Unfortunately, it's not so common in the US.

You crack open the top, and suck out the brothy liquid and then scoop out the chick, and the yolk. Some people chew on the hard, chewy egg white. You eat it with salt, pepper, and the Vietnamese herb, dau dam.

The taste is extremely hard to describe. The broth is sweet, like that of a really nice chicken soup, but better. The yolk is like a hard-boiled egg yolk, but of a firmer texture. The chick is soft, and sometimes you can feel the bones, but these are just considered crunchy. If you get one with feathers, it doesn't really feel weird. It will only taste bad to you, if you close off your mind and be that way. Of course if you start off eating something saying how disgusting it is, you're going to choke on it. This is why I personally believe the Fear Factor and Survivor people were using the wrong strategy. But to get to the point, it just tastes like duck. Maybe even liver. Just better.

I hope someday you try it, just so then you can decide for yourself if it's good or bad. Just a suggestion, though. Eat the chick whole. And try not to look at it. Wrap it in the herbs or something. The looks do not match the taste, though. Just don't be like tourists and sit there and cut it up in the hopes it will look less like a chick, and make it look like a maroon puddle of bits.

I think the real reason why people find eating balut so disconcerting is because it still looks like a living thing. We find more comfort in eating prepared meats, and in seafood, since the sea animals don't look quite as...pretty. So just avoid looking at it, and drop it in your mouth. You might like it like I do.

It is spelled Balut.... I tried long time ago as a bet... and I can say I will never eat it again no matter how much money is involved. There still a embryo of the duck and half is the egg white that becomes hard as a rock.. It taste like eggs with bone and feathers.

urrkks! Philippines - they believe it's an aphrodisiac - No, it is semi-fertilized, duck egg with the duckling almost completely formed, but without feathers yet. None of us in our tour group dare try it. Those who tried it say it's super! well ... what can I say?

yes i tried balut, there are three step to eat it, first you suck the "juice" inside, it tasts ok, then the second part you must not let it stay long in your mouth because its the embryo part,thats where the highest protein is, just swallow it immediately as fast as you can, and then the 3rd part is so easy its just like eating and tasting the egg, the egg we all know of :) i saw balut in tv fear factor :)
