Asthma is typically triggered by irritants, either physical or chemical, usually in form of pollens, food, dander and smoke. On the other hand lead poisoning or plumbism results when one consumes a significant amount of lead. Lead may have come from ingesting materials painted with lead-containing paint, food kept and served in lead based earthenware pottery, or maybe water from lead pipes.

I haven't heard of lead poisoning having such respiratory symptoms like that of asthma. Although I know the usual manifestations of plumbism ranges from Gastro-Intestinal ones (vomiting, abdominal pain, and constipation), Neurological (hyperirritability, lowered activity and changes in personality), Cardiac and Hematological in form of anemia, hypertension and lowered heart rate.

Most people with plumbism live at old deteriorating houses, where in the paint sloughs off. So, maybe, you might have gotten your lead from the paint and asthma from other small particles floatin around the air...

If the house/bldg is less than 50 years old, odds are darn slim of finding lead.

A building probably needs to be over 75 years old for lead paint problems and lead water pipes.

Between about 50 and 75 years old a lot of it will depend on Zoning laws affecting your town, Some allowed an abatement as in making so that anthing a baby could chew on was treaated.
Some required complete interior redoes

Most hardware stores sell lead test kits

I don't know what problems lead poisoning can cause, or what factors cause asthma, but I do know that in California, all children MUST have a lead test before kindergarten. My pediatrician recommends them at age 2-3.
If you suspect asthma, get your child to the doctor ASAP. Kids can die from that, if it's severe enough and untreated. Not something to mess with.
Best of luck to you.
