I've contacted many sugar producers in the U.K., U.S.A. and Canada and few if any still use bone charcoal in the process.
A few things you can do if the product contains sugar, is it kosher, parave means NO meat product, is it labelled suitable for vegan or have any vegan stamp of approval, then it's obviously not got bone in it!
In all instances contact the sugar manufacturer and as I said, most will tell you that cane sugar is vegan.
The following sugar companies DO NOT use bone-char filters:
Florida Crystals Refinery
Labels: Florida Crystals
Refined Sugars Incorporated
Labels: Jack Frost, Country Cane, 4# Flow-Sweet
Pillsbury
Makes powdered brown sugar
Supreme Sugar Company (subsidiary of Archer Daniels Midland)
Labels: Supreme, Southern Bell, Rouse's Markets

The bone char isn't what makes it white, but it is used in the processing of refined sugar, which is why most vegetarians use unrefined sugar, such as Sugar in the Raw brand.

Refined sugar is white because pure sugar is white. In the case of sugar, refined means things are take out, not put in.

No not in it but used as a filter. It is white because it's BLEACHED.
