First you might praise him on his growing desire to take responsibility over his health, and that this is what "big kids" and adults should do. Next you should explain to him that the reason he is feeling better is because he has been good about taking his medication in the past, and that his contoinued cooperation in the future will allow him to feel good adn not have astha. If it when his takes his medication that seems to be a problem, let him choose and have some responsibilty over when he wants to take his medications, but with the understanding that in order to feel good and to prevent future attacks, tht he will have to take his medication until his physician tells him differently. It's aslo been my experience in working with kids, that if you can hold out to them the possibility that with their cooperation, some day it may be possible to do away with some of their medication, that his will be an added incentive and motivation. Also tell him that this nurse wishes him all the best. Hope this helps!

My 5 year old was recently diagnosed with asthma as well. As for the taking of the medication the only comfort you may be able to offer is the fact that some kids can grow out of having asthma related symptoms (At least that is what my pediatrician told us). As for the allergy medications, dependant upon the allergy, they too can grow out of it. I was VERY allergic to penicillin as a child and have since grown out of it. I hope this little bit helps. Good luck.

Never take him off his meds. It's very hard for a child to understand the reason and necessity of taking medication. You have to tell him that he has to take it or he will be really sick. Try rewarding him. If he takes it everyday, do something special for him at the end of the week.
