Yeah, I just posted this the other day.

FAKEN!!! For BLT's
:)

"This marinated smoked tofu fries up into crisp veggie bacon! Freezing the tofu and thawing helps to improve the texture, and makes it easier to slice."
Original recipe yield: 4 servings.

Prep Time:
15 Minutes
Cook Time:
5 Minutes
Ready In:
20 Minutes
Servings:
4 (change)

INGREDIENTS:

* 1 (7.5 ounce) package smoked firm tofu, frozen and thawed
* 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
* 1 tablespoon water
* 2 tablespoons maple syrup
* 1 dash liquid smoke flavoring
* 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
* 1 teaspoon onion powder
* 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
* 2 tablespoons butter or margarine

DIRECTIONS:

1. Slice the thawed tofu into very thin slices (like bacon). In a medium bowl, stir together the yeast, water, maple syrup, liquid smoke, soy sauce, onion powder and garlic powder. Place the tofu strips into the bowl to marinate for at least 10 minutes.
2. Heat butter or margarine in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Quickly fry tofu strips until crisp, turning once, about 5 minutes. Drain on paper towels, and serve immediately.

When done, put on toast with veganaise, lettuce and tomato and you have an awesome BLT.

:)

I first ate this BLT at a vegan cafe'.
It is divine.

Using smoked-tofu and/or the liquid smoke gives it the bacon-y-ness

EDIT- p.s. It does not taste like the real thing... I can't imagine having the scientific capability to recreate the taste of pig fat, but this probably the most similar you can get to the taste of bacon.
;)

I have never made it, but the imitation ones are quite good. If they are done in the toaster oven, they come out quite crispy. It had been over a decade between the time I had bacon and the time I tried the imitation kind that I thought it was quite similar (salty and crunchy!) but without the nasty metallic taste of the actual meat. However, if it has not been a while since you have had bacon and you are looking for something that tastes the same, you may be disappointed.

First, never make the mistake of thinking that a soy or tofu based product will taste like the real thing. Once you get past that idea, the veggie bacons are okay....the best thing I've found is the Yves soy ground product that looks like ground beef. I've been able to substitute it for any ground beef in recipes with great success.

I have never made it from scratch but it is available in the freezer section of most grocery stores. The brand I use is Morningstar Farms. It tastes quite a bit like the real thing. The texture is different. It is thinner and crispier than "the real thing." You can microwave it or fry it. When you fry it, it tends to not be too crispy as the oil keeps it softer. When it is used in recipes like collards or soups that call for bacon, you absolutely cannot tell the difference. I have fooled many non-vegetarians! :-)

Someone here posted a "Faken" recipe in one of the threads a few days ago. I forgot which one. I think it involved smoked tofu being fried in oil. Or something like that.

I love morningstar faux bacon. Just make sure you don't overcook it. If you must, undercook it. I zap it for about 1 minute.

I have not made it but I buy it. It's made of soy. Lightlife's smart bacon is very good if you make it crispy.
