don't think so, but the exact origin of the term is unknown, but may relate to the habit of eating potato chips while watching TV

No they are always sprouting shoots. The most active veggy. People are called couch potatos cause of the roundish or ovalish or pearish shapes potatos grow in. Also because of the habit of eating in front of the T.V which is usually potato chips. Me I eat while at the computer often.. Maybe I should be called a computer potato! I seldom watch TV not much good on it! One has to get cable to get good programs and even most of them are reruns!
TV isn't worth my Time!

Potatoes aren't lazy in my house, they waste no time in sprouting wherever I put them.
I suppose lazy people are called couch potatoes because of their shape, it's an insult to a potato.

nicely I style of run down the middle line in this one. i'm truthfully not a settee potato, besides the actual incontrovertible truth that i love baked potato and that i'm not a well being freak, as I devour my percentage (or extra) of meals that are considered 'junk', so i'm not a well being potato nor am I a settee freak (lol)

i think the expression stems from an old t.v. advert years ago . if you remember as a child you could buy a kit to dress potatoes with to play.."mr potato head" and such like and these were used in some old adverts.

Potato's take awhile to grow...so maybe its cause as you sit down doing nothing you grow bigger as a potato does

maybe because potatoes are round and fat? so the more you sit on the couch the fatter and rounder you get....
