I was sick and finally felt better today. I have the type of asthma where you cough non-stop as much as you try to hold it in, you can't. I finished all my medicine yesterday and didn't worry about getting more because I felt much better. Than I did the stupidest thing, and cleaned the bathroom, inhaled a face load of lime-away and I have been coughing ever since. I have nothing but some sucrets that are doing nothing, and I only have two more anyway. This is painful and annoying and I want to be able to sleep tonight...I need some old country, backwoods type of remedy because I am not going to the store for cough medicine...that barely helps anyway! I am listening no matter how crazy your idea may sound!

I've had asthma as long as I can remember. Try drinking a cup of hot, strong black coffee. Don't use any milk or cream because this causes you to get more phlegm in your lungs. If you have a vaporizer or a humidifier use it. If you don't, boil some water in a large pot and put some menthol in it. Drape a towel over your head and the pot and inhale the steam. If you don't have menthol you can use peppermint or eucalyptus oil. You should ask your doctor to give you an inhaler such as albuterol for fast relief. This one doesn't cost so much. Also, if you can afford it try Advair. This inhaler helps reduce the number of attacks you have. If your asthma is really bad, you may need to take a week long treatment of steroids. When I am doing really bad this is the best treatment.

When did you start coughing? I have asthma as well. I get Bronchitis every winter, and it takes up to 8 weeks after it clears up for me to stop coughing. Sadly, there is not much we can do about that.

Just make sure that you are using your inhaler regularly, and that will help.

As far as "old country remedies", try sleeping with your head and shoulders elevated to help keep your airway open. Rub Vick's vap-o-rub, or something similar to that on your chest, and your back before bed.

And there are some tea's you might be able to drink that should help a bit as well. Camomille, fennell, stuff like that.

Hope that helps. (And stop inhaling limeaway ;-) )

By the way, I take Singulair pills every day, and use Flovent twice a day, every day. I also have Ventolin for emergencies. 2 inhalers, and a pill. just so I can breathe, and battle my enviromental allergies.

Ok, this works once in a while, but I wont guarantee it. Stick your head in your freezer and breath for a couple of minutes. It may stop the cough. Learned this when my son who has asthma played hockey. It was the only sport that didnt cause an asthma attack because there was no dust and the chilled air actually works like an inhaler. My doctor told me once in a while people with asthma can put there head in a freezer and breathe for a few minutes until the coughing stops.

Well, it's not backwoods or folk, but have you tried using your inhaler (do you have an inhaler for your asthma?). The symptoms you're describing are not uncommon for asthma, and cough suppressant probably won't help too much, but treating the asthma itself will, and the best way to do that (short term) is by using a beta agonist inhaler - something like albuterol (proventil, ventolin, etc.).

Over the counter cough medicine works great, but if your bringing up phlegm try huffing (clearing your throat) after the cough medicine! By the way inhalers and HHN's can cause more coughing, I'd imagine since you're an asthmatic you might takes those.

A steamy shower and hot teal usually helps me with my cough symptomatic asthma. Either that or some warm brandy ;-).

okay this may sound crazy but it works... My grandma's been using it for years, and my daughter has asthma so I know.
Take a clove of garlic, (mashed) a little bit of salt maybe half a teaspoon, and squeeze a lemon.
put all this in a huge table spoon and swallow it..
It will make you feel better..
Good luck!
