I currently have been taking metformin for 3 months and have found that it has helped my insulin resistance. I don't know what your situation is, but I was found to have reactive hypoglycemia. Whenever I eat sugar, my insulin skyrockets, but does not facilitate movement of glucose into my muscle cells for energy, but rather would store glucose as fat in my abdominal region.
After starting metformin, I have found that my blood sugar is now regulated and that I have a lot more energy than I did previously, which tells me that it is now helping the insulin in my body function properly.
I have no lost much weight yet with metformin, but I also take other medications, which could be affecting this. However, I have not had any weight gain since starting the medication, and it is by far the best diabetes drug to help with weight loss since it facilitates glucose uptake into muscles and also promotes the breakdown of lipids. Also, I'm not sure I have seen the full effect of the medication, as I hear it can take up to six months for its maximum effect.
Talk to your doctor and see what he/she says about it. The hardest thing to overcome for most patients is the fact that it can cause Gastrointestinal side effects that can bother some patients. However, if you can get past the stomach upset, then it will most likely work well for you.
Hope this helps!

I have the same problem and I just lost about 8 pounds in a week. I wasn't even trying. I went on vacation and we walked everywhere.(we ate out every meal and had dessert a few times so I know my calories were up) After every meal we walked. I think that may be the key to breaking through the insulin resistance. Not just exercise or burn more calories than you take in but actually some mild exercise after every meal. I think it helps the insulin to work better. This is totally unscientific and it's only been a week but I'm going to stick with it. I have never lost weight before and something changed! I was riding my bicycle over 4 miles a day and I didn't lose a pound but walking after eating really seemed to do something.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Introduction
Metformin is being increasingly used in the treatment of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome where it improves the metabolic and reproductive parameters through the improvement of insulin sensitivity.
Observations noted that it also tended to prevent weight gain or even facilitate weight loss.
Trials carried out have positively enforced this in obese patients as well as those with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.
We were interested to see if a similar favourable effect could be replicated in a District General Hospital and thus implemented into routine clinical practice.
Method
Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and/or Obesity (BMI>30) attending the Endocrine clinic were initiated on Metformin 500mg twice daily, and referred to a specialist dietician.
They were then followed up four monthly for assessment, during which they were reweighed, and had Metformin dose adjustments.
Notes were made of symptom change (Menstruation, hirsutism, acne), side effects, further medication and satisfaction.
Results
Data was successfully collected for 24 patients.
Of these 18 had PCOS and 6 were Morbidly Obese.
Their average weight at the start was 122 SD 44kg.
Average weight at the end was 115 SD40 kg with weight loss being 6 SD12kg.
The duration of treatment was on average 15months with the majority having been on for 6 months.
3 patients gained weight and 2 remained static.
The average dose used was 2 grams.
9 developed side effects on the Metformin but only 3 needed to discontinue.
11 Females had more regular menstrual cycles but hardly any felt that their hair growth had lessened.
Conclusion
This suggests that Metformin used in aid of weight loss in obese patients or in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is beneficial.
The weight loss improves their self-confidence and renews their determination to persevere.
Side effects are possible but the majority tolerate it reasonably well.

Forget anything you have ever been told about Diabetes.
And get this - it has nothing to do with insulin, exercise, diet or anything else you've heard in the past. It's all based on latest breakthrough research that Big Pharma is going Stir Crazy to hide from you.

Unfortunately, most of the drugs that treat diabetes also cause weight gain (by allowing your body to get that sugar out of the blood and use it). There are a few that do not, Byetta, for one (though it's injectible) and possibly Januvia (though I don't know that, it works by the same mechanism as Byetta).
That's not to say that you shouldn't take the drugs, they'll still benefit you in the long run, but they won't help you loose weight.
