If you have an infection caused by a biological agent, then an anti biotic will work. If, however, you have an infection caused by a virus (eg a cold is caused by a virus, as is the flu), then anti-biotics are not effective. In fact in the long run, taking antibiotics when you do not need them will cause you greater grief in the long run. So make sure that what you have is treatable with antibiotics. Otherwise, just wait it out and let your body heal itself.

yes - once sinus inflamation has turned into an infection it's a very good way to deal with a sinus infection...at least from my personal experience...i'm no doctor, but dfrom what i undrstand the inflamation in the nasal cavity/sinuses keeps the mucus from flowing out and as the mucus sits it carries infection...which breads and fills the sinus cavities, irritates the sinuses and makes you feel just awful...blowing your nose too often is not good with a sinus infection as it irritates the sinuses and makes drainage more difficult - obviously you'll need to at some points, but i try to linit it to once an hour...it can also cause nosebleeds and left untreated causes throat and ear infections (it spreads)...

I'm a nurse. Sometimes allergies or even a virus. I hope this answers your question. Oh yes you need an antibiotic to rid yourself of the infection, it won't leave your body without it. Any type of infection needs to be treated with antiobiotics. From a yeast infection to a std or anything like that. Take care.

Yes if the infection is bacterial. There are two causes for any infection, virus or bacteria. Usually a virus needs to run its course, they don't play well with antibiotics. Bacteria play well and can be cleared up with the proper antibiotics.

Yes. Most sinus infections are bacterial, but not all.
The antibiotic should clear it up but sometimes the strain of bacteria needs a different drug.

absolutely. i have them about 3 times a year. all kinds of things can cause it. when i begin to get a cold it immed goes to my sinuses & they get infected. also caused by swelling in the sinuses by allergies, a bacteria that got in, lotsa reasons. if you haven't gone to the doc yet, you gotta go or it's get worse. the first time my eardrum burst from this, i was one, then again when i was 12, 18, 24, and just last year. The mucous comes to try to flush stuff out, but when there's sooooo much, & you blow your nose and it doesnt all come out & stays in there and gets infected. sorry this is messy, my bf is singing really loud...really BADLY and i can't pay attention anymore. good luck!
