I have been coughing/congested now for almost 3 months... Several factors, I have pets, work in a bar, smoke, weather is not consistent, and also have gas heat. I've only lived in my house since Sept. had the heat on Nov.
I also have extremely un-controlable high blood pressure so all the sinus/allergy meds with decongestiants are out of question. Now I am going through the post nasal drip process and cough every 5 seconds, turn to gag, turn to watery eyes... and can't breath without coughing... My dr tells me the same thing each time I go... take some cough syrup... and use vicks to breath... (I can't do much more than that) I've tried muxinex, that hasn't worked, cough drops/syrup do nothing, and I can't sleep... suggestions?!?!?
Not sure if it's allergies, the weather, a cold, the gas heat in my house (never had before heard it really dries ya out) I have a humidifier... just getting tired of it... Grr....
(I hate cold season!)

Pseudoephedrine to stop the drip has always worked well for me. As for the gas heat drying you out, it's true and the only way to fight it is with a humidifier or vaporizer. Cepacol has always worked for me on the throat. As far as the cough, if the pseudoephedrine doesn't stop the cough by stopping the drip anything with Dextromethorphan (30mg) has always worked for me. Good Luck>

Personally, I've had great success with Robitussin DM. Seems to work pretty well for me. You want to find a cough medicine with dextromethorphan (just don't abuse it :-) and Guaifenesin. The first is a cough suppressant, the second is an expectorant. (Loosens and clears the pghlem.)

Now, there is some thought that the effects of cough syrups are purely placebo, and that they only work because people BELIEVE they work. See this article from the Harvard Press:

http://www.health.harvard.edu/press_releases/cough-medicines.htm

I guess I happen to believe, and so they seem to work for me.

My wife is a FIRM believer in warm herbal tea with lots of honey and lemon, and maybe a shot of whiskey or brandy in it. (Really.) She swears by it.

Good luck!

Robitussen DM works pretty good for me. Make sure to buy the one with Guifensen as an active ingredient. I've been sick since Thanksgiving...still coughing up mucus mostly in the evenings and early mornings. I feel like I may never get my real voice back!! Argh too!! I also use the Chloraseptic throat spray to numb things up ... good luck!

You can smoke with all those symptoms, they are enough to kill someone. The cold renmedy that I think works best for me is Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold....It calms it down so I can sleep.I'm not sure about the high blood pressure, but give it a try,in the daytime---so you can really tell if it works .Plus you can see if it effects you BP.Isn't the Dr. worried about the cough? There is prescripton cough syrup for HBP patients.......

You can try Buckley's. They claim that it taste awful, but it works. Though, I never personally never have tried it myself. Maybe it will work for you.
