My mom has diabetes and I know she is not taking care of herself like she should. When she first found out (she was scared of dying, losing her eyesite, losing feet, etc...) she was so strict with her diet the doctor put her on and lost so much weight and looked good. Now she has the attitude that her medicine will take care of it. How can I get her to take care of herself like she was doing in the beginning? I know this sounds mean but is there any sites you all know of that has some seriously scary stuff (gruesome pictures would be a plus) on them about what can happen to you when you don't take care of your diabetes properly? Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated also.

Your mother knows what to do, but she is "tired of the fight" and simply wishes to "be normal again". I have the same problem.
Scaring her won't do it. Loving her enough to talk it through will probably accomplish a lot more. Keep telling her how important she is to you and your family.
Maybe a visit and consultation with a dietitian for food choice guidance would help her.

Your mother sounds like a typical diabetes patient. I don't know that I can show her anything scary, because diabetes won't really affect her for a while. She won't feel bad, and the problems it will cause will start in years, not weeks or months. However, if she doesn't get her sugar under control, she puts herself at greater risk for heart disease, vascular disease (including requiring amputations), blindness, and kidney disease (which can even go so far as to necessitate dialysis). The meds can help, but there's nothing as good as loosing weight and keeping fit. The problem is that she has to do it, there's not a pill that can just take care of everything.
If it helps, I'm a doctor, I've treated dozens of diabetics (probably hundreds by now) and the ones who don't take responsibility for their disease and keep their sugar low (by taking their meds on schedule, keeping their weight down, and staying fit) will have more problems earlier, and can have very severe problems.

Just let her know how much you love her and that you are worried about her. The scary and grusome pictures won't help and nagging will just make her distance herself from the disease, and you..... I know because I did great in the beginning too, and have slowly gained weight, which I worked so hard to lose. I am finially back on track and nagging only made me angry and sad, and it didn't motivate me at all. Offer to talk walks or bike rides with her or maybe join Curves with her, and maybe having a work out buddy will help her to regroup.

I know you probably do not want to hear this but, as a Type 1 diabetic person myself, she probably knows all of the complications. You can not make her take care of herself. The more you push the more she will probably resent it. She has to want to do it herself.

Unfortunately, your story is fairly common . . meds should just be a "crutch" while learning to comply with a diabetic diet to meet blood glucose numbers:

Compliance pretty much has to be HER idea however . . might review estate planning:
