no, not the average vegan. but if you are only eating carbs, of course you will gain weight! if you are going to be a vegan, you should be eating mostly fruits and vegetables, and taking non-dairy calcium suplements. the only carbs you should be eating are beans are rice, because they will provide you with the protein you need. the occasional bit of pasta or potatoes wont kill you but if that's all you're eating you'll soon be obese! (no offense)

I became vegan about a year ago. I lost 15 lbs in the first month or so, then it leveled off. I have kept the weight off more or less. I do ok unless I binge on something like peanut butter, pasta, or sugary juices. Try to eat things like lentils, vegetable soups, multigrain bread & crackers, steamed veggies, and brown rice. Good luck and congratulations on making an excellent change in your life. You won't regret it.

I gained some weight eating only veggs and pasta, some chips, lots of beer, but the reason I gain weight is the beer, if I cut it out, my weight would stay the same, so yes all vegans gain weight in begginiinnning of tha stage

I actually lost weight when I switched over but then again I didnt eat chips all the time hehe. I'd recomend that you try eating more lentils, beans and chickpeas. There are high in fibre and protein but arent as starchy as potatoes and bread. They are also very hearty and versitile and they WILL fill you up. Lots of spinach, peas and broccoli are also very good.

Depends entirely upon your food choices. I lost over 10 pounds when I first went vegetarian--- and I was eating yogurt, etc. I didn't know much about the best food choices, either, so I ate a lot of peanut butter, cheese, bread... still lost weight.
If you lean toward more whole grains (brown rice, etc.) and proteins like tofu, beans, etc. you will be far healthier and lose excess weight in addition. Try home-cooked oatmeal with fruit and a few nuts or soy milk for breakfast--- you will be FULL.
Next meal have baked tofu, steamed vegetables, and brown rice with a sprinkling of nutritional yeast (for B12). Next meal, a mega-sized salad with sprouts of all sorts, toasted sunflower seeds, even a little wholegrain pasta if desired.
If you're still hungry after all that, eat some good multigrain bread--toasted with a nut butter or some spread on it (There are many yummy nut-butters and spreads/dips in the health food store with higher nutrients than just peanut butter--altho peanuts are healthy too)
Many variations on the theme above---hearty soups made with beans and brown rice or barley and lots of vegetables. Stir fries with tofu and vegetables--Even if you are not a gourmet cook it is hard to mess these up. There are tasty vegan frozen foods in regular stores like Safeway, etc.--- like Boca burgers on a wholewheat bun--- that are healthy and filling. There are packages of dried things, too---to be made alone, or added to other things (like spices for scrambled tofu)
Check out the internet for healthy veg recipes--- there are a zillion websites. If there is a natural foods store or deli/restaurant near you, eat there from time to time just to get some ideas, and know what you like or don't like. Then you can learn to cook these things at home. Most veg dinners take no more than 30 minutes to prepare---start to finish-- really not hard to make. (Except for the super-fancy stuff, of course!)
You need to eat healthy to be healthy--- mostly chips, white pasta, etc. won't stay with you (keep you feeling fed) nor will they keep you healthy. Changing your diet this radically presents you with such a good time to improve your eating habits at the same time.
With any changes we make in our lives, it is always good to add something better instead of just dropping something out of our lives--- whether we're talking food choices, friends, habits, whatever... ; )

Good luck!

If oily carbohydrates are consumed to excess then it will deffinately contribute to obesity! But if vegetables and other foods are eaten without the addition of oil butter then it should be quite healthy!
