Asthma is caused by airway constriction. The airways constrict secondary to the contraction of the smooth muscle that surrounds the airways. Asthma medications primarily act to relax these smooth muscles to open up the airways.

Knowing this, yes... people die from asthma quite often. In the case of Nikki Taylor's younger sister, she failed to get prescription medication for her asthma and instead bought over-the-counter Primatene Mist. Primatene Mist can be very effective in the short-term (but it doesn't last long). It's essentially an inhaled epinephrine and people tend to build tolerance to this medication rapidly. She died because she had an acute episode. The Primatene Mist probably worked briefly, but when her airways clamped down again... well, you know the end result.

It's sad to speculate after the fact, but if she had used a Beta-2 Agonist like Albuterol Sulfate, or an anti-cholinergic drug like Ipatropium Bromide (Atrovent), she might have had a better outcome.

Several hundred people die every year because they didn't know that their puffer was empty or if it was plugged up.

There is/was a move to have a counter on the rescue inhalers

If you don't know how.. Remove the medicine canister Flush the actuator from both directions with hot water, dry and put the unit back together,

I have an extra puffer on hand just in case

Nikki Taylor (the model) had a younger sister that died from asthma about 12 years ago. I think she did not have her inhaler with her and she suffocated to death.

i've never really heard of asthma releated deaths, i know that a serious asthma attack left untreated can stop your breathing, which can be fatal.
